-- 19 January 2010:  If you saw NBC Nightly News on Tuesday night you couldn’t help but feel a great deal of pride to see the report of how Israel dispatched two jumbo jets to Haiti immediately after last week’s disaster – one full of medical supplies and equipment, the other with medical personnel. The Israeli presence represents not only best example of Jewish sensitivity to the suffering of others, but also the most advanced high tech medical equipment, enabling the Israel medical team to see and treat a vast number of individuals in an efficient way and be able to share diagnoses with experts around the world in cases where consultation is needed.

The Israel Defense Forces field hospital includes 40 doctors, 25 nurses, paramedics, a pharmacy, a children’s ward, a radiology department, an intensive care unit, an emergency room, two operating rooms, a surgical department, an internal medicine department and a maternity ward.

Perhaps the thing that I found most inspiring was the officer who quoted the Talmudic saying that “He who saves a single soul is as if he saved an entire world.” (Tractate Sanhedrin). How great it is when ancient Jewish texts take on such an immediate significance!!
